International Case Study: Masco – High Productivity Process Cranes
Manufacturing today is a capital intensive business. Cranes play a crucial role in material flow as this innovative installation by Masco Cranes for Liebherr Canada shows.
Most people know Liebherr as the international company that manufactures construction cranes and heavy plant. They have factories throughout the world using technology to create workshops where material can flow efficiently. Though the specification for this Canadian facility originated in Europe, Masco Cranes were able to respond to the order for a crane type that is thought to be the first of its kind in North America.
The pictures tell it all. To meet the need for component transfer between workstations, six wall travelling jib cranes of five tonnes that projected 25 feet were installed at Liebherr’s remanufacturing facility in Alberta. Jib cranes of this type are not common in North America, but are increasingly seen in Europe.

To provide flexible coverage of the whole workshop and flexible capacity for higher loads, the workshop is also provided with a 70 foot span 30 tonne double box girder OTC, incorporating a 25 tonne main hoist and five tonne auxiliary hoist. All hoist are from the Street ZX Series.

One of the strengths of the Street network is that we are able to share technical information and experience. If you encounter an unusual specification, please let us know and we can often draw on our experience and that of other partners to provide an answer to the client’s need. Matt Beck observed, “When Masco received this project we knew we had a crane design we have never encountered before as a crane manufacturer. With the support of Street, we manufactured and supplied a product that is unique in Canada. The cranes supplied for this project have received positive feedback from executives and project managers throughout Canada who came to view the Masco and Street design.”
Due to the positive feedback and success of the project, Masco anticipates using this design on future projects. – Matt Beck
