VX Built Up hoist key features

Capacities and duty classifications
The modular design of the Custom Built Up Hoist (VX) allows standard solutions to be configured from pre-engineered components, supporting an exceptionally wide range of capacities and duty classifications. This approach provides flexibility without compromising structural integrity or performance, and allows the VX to fully meet the requirements of North American and international standards, including CMAA, ASME, UL, and CSA, as well as ISO, EN, BS, FEM, and HMI.The VX is typically applied in CMAA Class D and Class E process-duty applications, where frequent operation, higher load spectra, and demanding service conditions require a robust, engineered lifting solution. In lighter-duty configurations, the VX can also be supplied in CMAA Class C applications with capacities up to 250 tons, offering exceptional versatility across a broad range of industrial lifting requirements. This modular architecture makes the VX ideally suited for high-duty and severe service environments where engineered solutions are required to meet demanding operational and regulatory requirements.
True Vertical Lift (TVL) – Precision Load Control
The VX hoist drum is double-reeved, left-to-right, providing True Vertical Lift (TVL) with virtually zero hook drift throughout the full lift height. This configuration ensures accurate load positioning and improved operator control, particularly in high-capacity and long-lift applications. The double-reeved drum arrangement also promotes equal load distribution across the crane bridge or supporting structure, reducing localized stresses and improving overall crane performance and service life.
Hoist Brake mounted on hoist gearbox
The VX is equipped with a DC-actuated disc brake mounted on the hoist gearbox, providing precise, reliable load control for high-duty and high-capacity applications. The DC-actuated design ensures fast, consistent brake response and smooth engagement, which is critical for accurate load positioning and controlled stopping under varying load conditions. In the event of power loss, the brake is spring-applied and fail-safe, automatically holding the load securely without reliance on the hoist motor.By mounting the disc brake on the gearbox rather than the motor, the brake remains fully effective even if the motor is removed or if a motor coupling, shaft, or electrical connection were to fail. This configuration also isolates brake-generated heat from the motor, resulting in lower motor operating temperatures, improved component life, and increased overall system reliability. This brake arrangement is particularly well suited for high-duty, severe service, and process-critical applications where safety, repeatability, and maintainability are paramount.
Extended hoist drum and wire rope life
The VX is engineered with optimized drum and sheave diameter ratios designed to extend the service life of the hoist drum and wire rope in accordance with the selected hoist duty classification. These ratios reduce bending stress on the wire rope, resulting in increased lift cycles and improved long-term reliability. The hoist utilizes double-scrolling drum design to provide balanced rope reeving across the full lift. This ensures even rope winding and load distribution, which further extends rope and drum service life while enhancing overall operational safety and consistency. This design approach is especially beneficial in high-duty and process-critical applications, where maximizing component life and maintaining predictable performance are essential.
Hand lever hoisting brake release
The Custom Built Up Hoist (VX) includes a hand lever hoisting brake release, a critical safety and service feature that is not standard on most competitive hoists. In the event of a power outage or mechanical breakdown, the hand lever brake release allows the operator to safely and controlledly lower the load, minimizing downtime and reducing risk to personnel and equipment. This capability is especially valuable in high-capacity and process-critical applications where suspended loads cannot remain unattended.By providing a controlled manual brake release, the VX enhances operational safety, emergency response capability, and serviceability, making it a reliable solution for demanding industrial environments.
High performance hoist motors
VX Hoists are equipped with high-performance hoist motors specifically selected to match the application and duty classification. Motors are Class F or Class H insulated and typically rated for 60% ED, making them well suited for high-duty and process-driven lifting applications. Each motor is provided with over-temperature protection and housed in a IP55-rated enclosure to ensure reliable operation in harsh industrial environments. For precise control and repeatable performance, the VX utilizes closed-loop motor control with encoder feedback. This allows accurate speed regulation, smooth acceleration and deceleration, and consistent performance under varying load conditions—critical for high-capacity, high-duty, and precision lifting applications.
Heavy duty hoist gearbox
All gears are hardened and ground, fully enclosed and submerged in an oil bath. The gearbox has a gear inspection cover and a motor coupling inspection facility.
Safety overload cut off device
A capacity overload using load cell prevents the operator inadvertently overloading the hoist.
Closed loop variable speed drive (VFD) on hoisting and lowering
Speeds are varied by means of a frequency inverter in “closed loop” with a motor encoder which provides a high safety level through continuous speed monitoring. As standard this system provides the facility to programme hoisting and lowering speeds as well as acceleration and deceleration to suit your application. Gentle acceleration reduces the loading of mechanisms and improves productivity, hoist life and safety.
Electrical braking
Electrical braking of the hoist motor is standard with VX which significantly reduces wear on the mechanical hoist brake linings.
