The Street ZX Hoist: Our All-Purpose Workhorse with Genuine Differences.

The first generation Street ZX electric wire rope hoist was developed in the late 1990s and quickly became the best-selling hoist product in Street’s history, firmly establishing the company as a global hoist manufacturer. From the outset, the ZX hoist was designed with ease of inspection and maintenance as a core design principle. This approach resulted in a strong reputation for reliability and long service life, with a proven record across a wide range of industrial applications and operating environments worldwide.

Every function of the latest generation ZX hoist has been thoroughly reviewed and enhanced with a series of engineering innovations to deliver new levels of usability, performance, and durability. The hoist’s service-friendly design reduces inspection time, simplifies routine maintenance, and minimizes repair downtime—resulting in significant reductions in maintenance and repair costs over the life of the hoist. Compared to competing designs, these lifecycle efficiencies can save many thousands of dollars over the operating life of the hoist, while incorporating state-of-the-art technology required for demanding industrial service.

ZX hoist key features

Superior hoist braking safety
On many conventional wire rope hoists, the brake is mounted on the hoist motor shaft. In this configuration, the brake cannot hold the load in the event of a failure of the motor shaft, motor coupling, or motor connection. The Street ZX hoist is engineered differently.ZX hoists are designed with the brake mounted directly on the hoist gearbox rather than the motor. This braked gearbox arrangement ensures that the load is securely held even in the event of motor shaft, coupling, or connection failure—and will continue to hold the load even if the hoist motor is completely removed. In addition to this critical safety advantage, separating the brake from the motor reduces heat transfer into the motor, resulting in lower motor operating temperatures, improved efficiency, and extended motor service life.
No external or open hoist gears
The Street ZX achieves higher reliability and lower lifetime operating cost by eliminating open gearing from the hoist transmission. This is accomplished through the use of fully hardened and precision-ground gears operating in a continuous oil bath within a robust, sealed hoist gearbox. This design ensures consistent lubrication, reduced wear, and long-term durability in demanding industrial environments.By contrast, some conventional hoists drive the hoist drum using an external pinion and spur ring located outside the gearbox—often selected to minimize initial purchase cost. However, external gearing relies on consistent grease maintenance and is exposed to contamination and wear. Inadequate lubrication of these open gears can quickly lead to accelerated wear, unplanned downtime, and costly repairs. The ZX enclosed, oil-bath gearbox design significantly reduces maintenance requirements and helps avoid these failure modes, delivering a lower total cost of ownership over the life of the hoist.
Hand brake release
Conventional hoists do not have a hand brake release but there are circumstances when the ability to lower a load without power to the brake is crucial, hence it is standard on ZX hoists.
Unique solution to prevent ‘slack rope’ failures
With many other hoist designs, an accidental slack-rope condition—such as when the hook is lowered too far—can allow the wire rope to pull through a single-band rope guide. This can result in damage to the hoist wire rope and/or the rope guide, leading to increased maintenance, unplanned downtime, and premature component replacement. The Street ZX avoids this failure mode through its unique double-band rope guide design. A rotating inner band positively clamps the rope to the drum and prevents pull-through, even during accidental slack-rope events. The inner band is guided by a fixed outer band, maintaining continuous rope control and effectively eliminating failures associated with slack rope.
Unique fail-safe hoist drum
All ZX6 and ZX8 hoists have a continuous shaft through the hoist drum, plus specifically designed drum retention flanges. This arrangement ensures that should the drum fail the rope will be retained by the shaft and conversely should the shaft fail, the retention flanges will retain the drum and shaft.
Additional protection against overloading
ZX hoists have a unique torque arm capacity restrictor between gearbox and hoist frame which senses the total load transmitted by the hoist mechanism, not just the load on the ropes. The device not only protects against an operator accidentally attempting a load greater than capacity, but also protects against an overload caused by impedance of hoist rotation. It does not rely on measuring motor current which can vary due to other factors.
Unique electrical specification and protection
ZX hoists are available in the USA, Canada with certification to UL or CSA standards. Quick release plug and socket connections are standard and all panel wiring is identified with termination connection reference. Every hoist is equipped with an ‘hours in service meter’ continuously recording the total running time since commissioning.
Variable speed trolley drive
Variable frequency drive (VFD) is standard on the trolley and programmed for ramp and hold with a two-position controller. This allows the operator to start at micro-speed and ramp up towards full speed, with the ability to hold any speed in between. Alternatively, the standard controls are simple to program for two pre-set speeds.
Heavy duty external hoist motor
The ZX hoist motor is mounted externally for optimum cooling and maximum accessibility. Motor insulation is a minimum of Class F and overheating protection in the windings is standard. The motor is duty rated strictly in accordance with hoist classification and protected against ingress of dust particles and water in accordance with IP55 (NEMA 3R).
