79 Years Expertise in Designing Portal and Semi-Portal Cranes.
Portal cranes also known as Goliath cranes are robust lifting machines designed for heavy-duty applications. They feature a bridge supported by two sturdy legs that run on floor-mounted rails, allowing them to move large loads horizontally and vertically. These cranes are typically used outdoors in environments such as stockyards, shipyards, and construction sites due to their ability to handle substantial weights and their stability.
In contrast, Semi-Portal cranes have one leg running on a floor-mounted rail and the other end of the bridge supported by a high-level rail, often attached to a building or structure. This design makes semi-portal cranes suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications, offering flexibility in environments where space or structural constraints exist.
Both types of cranes are versatile but their structural differences make them suitable for a variety of different applications and environments.
All can be equipped with Street ZX electric wire rope hoists, VX open hoists, or LX electric chain hoists to suit specific lifting requirements.
Street Portal cranes are the perfect solution for efficient lifting and handling in many industry applications such as in open stockyards where many such applications are heavy duty and require fast speeds to achieve required cycle times. With the use of software tools we can provide an analysis of the necessary crane speeds, utilisation and load spectrum for the specified stock movements in a given application. By this method we ensure each crane is a bespoke solution to give reliable service through the appropriate duty classification of mechanisms, structures and electrical systems. Street pre-engineered Portal cranes provide efficient and competitively priced solutions for manufacturing and maintenance applications on indoor and outdoor sites. A cantilevered beam construction is an option whereby the load can be transported outside the rail centres as may be required for roadside loading bays or when loads need to be transferred from one crane to another.
Street Semi-Portal cranes are a variation on the goliath crane concept and run on one floor rail and one high level rail mounted on columns or a building structure. Semi-Portal cranes are suitable for the applications described above for full portal cranes but they bring unique advantages in certain applications. In particular they bring specific benefits where they are specified to run beneath overhead cranes in production facilities to give localised hook service to production cells down one side of a bay and the overhead crane provides general hook service of the whole bay. They may also operate under a gantry crane cantilever as shown in the adjacent application picture.
