Some of the essential requirements in the precast concrete industry are fast cycle times, arduous duty, semi-automatic control and variable environments which often call for specially designed solutions rather than off-the-shelf equipment. In the production process, two levels of cranes may be required with overhead cranes spanning the full bay and either wall travelling jib cranes or semi-goliath cranes covering specific processes at a lower level.

Stockyard cranes for the precast industry are typically single or double girder portal or semi-portal construction, usually with high-speed travel motions to minimise loading times in a long yard.
