Street Crane celebrates 80 years with special open day

Street Crane Company welcomed around 1000 visitors to its special open day last Saturday, giving the local community a unique opportunity to step inside its crane and hoist works and celebrate the company’s remarkable 80-year history.

The event opened the doors of both the Crane Works and Hoist Works, with Street Crane employees on hand throughout the day to show visitors around the facilities, explain how the company’s products are designed and manufactured, and share their knowledge and experiences.

Visitors ranged from young children discovering the world of engineering for the first time to former employees returning to see how the company has evolved over the years.

One of the highlights of the day was seeing so many former Street Crane employees return to the business, alongside current employees who brought their own families along to share in the celebrations. It was a fitting reflection of the people and generations who have played a part in the company’s story.

The 80th anniversary celebrations also provided a special opportunity to remember Street Crane’s founder, Peter Street. Three classic Sunbeam cars associated with Peter Street were on display, giving visitors a glimpse into the company’s heritage and the history of the man who founded the business.

The day was not just about cranes and engineering, however. Blythe House Hospicecare was also in attendance, helping to bring a strong community and charitable element to the event.

Visitors were kept refreshed throughout the day with The Flying Purple Pizza Eater, Pomeroy Farm ice cream and coffee from the Flock Coffee Van, creating a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere around the works.

For Street Crane, the open day was a chance to celebrate more than eight decades of engineering and innovation — it was also an opportunity to thank the employees, former employees, families, customers and local community who have helped make the company what it is today.

With around 1000 people coming through the doors, the response made the 80th anniversary a celebration to remember.
